Enhancements to ISOES' structure underway -- Alvah C. Bittner Jr., Ph.D

Vote: President-Elect, constitution

Conference Workshops June 9 and 10

Announcement: ISOES Dues Notice to be mailed April 1

Enhancements to ISOES' structure underway: A letter from the President
 Alvah C. Bittner Jr. Ph.D. The ISOES is continuing the positive growth and change described in the last newsletter. Since that last newsletter (which reflected a new format), the ISOES Directory has been published, an expanded ISOES Website established, and an updated and revised ISOES Constitution submitted for your consideration. We have also seen in the Preliminary Conference Program considerable efforts toward high quality sessions, presentations, and workshop opportunities at the ISOES-sponsored Annual International Occupational Ergonomics and Safety Conference '98 (June 11-14). As you might suspect, these accomplishments reflect the considerable efforts of your officers with the professional organizational support of Patrice Olivier-Wilson of Biz-Comm, Inc. There is one other significant change that signals maturation of the ISOES.

The first issue of the ISOES journal, Occupational Ergonomics, has been sent out to our membership. Based on emailed and phoned comments, it is clear that many of you are delighted with the span and content of the six reports (and the promise of future articles). I share in this, too. When the quarterly journal was conceived in 1994, it was planned to be provided-together with growing ISOES publications and services-as a feature of membership. It was also anticipated that there would be a need to modestly increase the annual dues, which remained at $25 per year for more than a decade. You will see the modest increase to $75 reflected in annual dues statements. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Conference and would welcome your suggestions for the future.

Vote: President -Elect, constitution We have two candidates for the position of President-Elect. (See ballot.) To be eligible for nomination, the candidate must be a ISOES member in good standing for at least two years and have served in an elected capacity in the Executive Council for at least one year. A waiting period of two years is mandatory before an officer may seek re-election to the same office. The President-Elect is responsible for elections of new officers and for organizing the Awards Committee. After serving one year as President-Elect, s/he will take over as President for one year and subsequently serve as Past-President for one year.

Full members may vote on this issue. Please return the ballot to:

Dr. Kumar also mailed out changes to the ISOES constitution in February. Please respond with your vote to him by March 31.

Conference Workshops June 9, 10

The International Occupational Ergonomics and Safety Conference, June 11-14, 1998, has a great selection of workshops, June 9 -10, presented by world renowned researchers and educators. Rarely are we offered the opportunity to obtain specific training on so many topics from leaders in the ergonomics field.

The Participatory Ergonomics workshop is led by Andy Imada, who "wrote the book" defining the field of Participatory Ergonomics. Hal Hendricks, who has helped to make the term "Macroergonomics" internationally known, is teaching a workshop. The Rehabilitation Ergonomics workshop is also being taught by one of the foremost researcher in the field, Shrawan Kumar.

If you have reviewed the literature on Manual Materials Handling or Cumulative Trauma Disorders, the names Anil Mital and Jeff Fernandez, who are offering workshops on these areas, will be familiar. Kurt Landau is offering a workshop on Computerized Workload Analysis; Arun Garg is presenting Healthcare Ergonomics; and Bill Moroney is leading his ever- popular workshop on Preparing Questionnaires.

Other opportunities for training and continuing education

The International Occupational Ergonomics and Safety Conference, June 11-14, 1998, is preceded by workshops, June 9 -10. It is scheduled to offer the opportunity for also attending the well-known Short Courses at the University of Michigan, June 1-5, or June 8-10, 1998.

Occupational Ergonomics: June 1-5

The Occupational Ergonomics course provides an ergonomics overview for engineers, managers, labor representatives, safety professionals, industrial hygienists, and health care professionals who are getting started in ergonomics, but also serves to update those already working in the field on the latest ergonomic issues and methods.

This course is concerned with the control of work related musculoskeletal disorders. It provides enough background to allow attendees to evaluate work situations and begin to design appropriate interventions with a special emphasis on ergonomic issues associated with upper limb and back disorders.

Instructors:

  • Thomas J. Armstrong, Ph.D. (co-chair);
  • Don B. Chaffin, Ph.D. (co-chair);
  • James Foulke;
  • Alfred Franzblau, M.D.; and
  • Andrew Haig, M.D.
  • The registration fee is $1950, unless you are able to register before April 7, when the fee is $1875.

    Ergonomics: Job Analysis and Field Studies: June 8-10

    This course emphasizes the development of practical job analysis skills needed to identify and evaluate ergonomic stresses. It is intended for engineers, managers, and safety and health professionals with knowledge of ergonomics who are responsible for implementing ergonomic control programs.

    Lectures and demonstrations of contemporary job analysis methods are followed by field case studies of manufacturing, service, and clerical jobs. During field studies, students observe jobs and collect preliminary data to determine the causes of ergonomic stresses and to develop recommendations for reducing these stresses to an acceptable level. Team findings are then presented and discussed in an informal workshop format.

    Instructors:

    • W. Monroe Keyserling, Ph.D. (chair);
    • Stover H. Snook, Ph.D.;
    • Bradley Joseph, Ph.D.;
    • Randall Rabourn, M.S.;
    • and Sheryl Ulin, Ph.D.

    Course Fee: $1175

    Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for these courses. For more information and preliminary registration see the University of Michigan, Web site: http://cpd.engin.umich.edu/cpd/esc/sci.html. Or you can telephone (734) 647-7200 to register or for information.

     Supplement More workshops:

    In addition to the Conference workshop program mentioned in the Spring 98 newsletter, please note some additional workshops that are offered:

    Karl Kroemer will be conducting a workshop in "Ergonomics of Computer Workstations." He will discuss posture; lighting; equipment, such as, chairs, keyboards, monitors, work surfaces, and accessories; and ergonomic innovations. Dr. Kroemer is an active educator and one of the foremost researchers on "Alternative Keyboards." He has contributed to some of the fundamental literature in ergonomics, including coauthoring the books, Ergonomics: How to Design for Ease and Efficiency; Engineering Physiology: Bases of Human Factors/Ergonomics; and has recently coauthored a revision of Fitting the Task to the Human with Etienne Grandjean (1997, 5th ed.).

    A workshop on "Safety and the Older Adult: Ensuring Task Demands Do Not Exceed Changing Capacities" will be presented by James Ashton-Miller, along with other experts in aging, N.B. Alexander, B.J. Giordani, and M.D. Grabiner. They will review the normal aging changes and gender differences, that can be expected in the sensory, musculoskeletal, and neuropsychological systems of the healthy older adult. They will also address issues of these healthy older adults being present in the workforce in increasing numbers. Dr. James A. Ashton-Miller is a Senior Research Scientist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a Principal Investigator on National Institute of Health research grants on aging.

    Please see the Preliminary Conference Program for dditional details on these and the other workshops.

    Ground Transportation:

    For transportation from the Detroit airport to the conference hotel, in addition to rental cars, Commuter Transportation (1 800 488 7433) provides shuttle service at $13/person. Taxi cabs will cost about $20/person.

    Hotel Reservations:

    PLEASE NOTE: When making reservations for the Annual International Occupational Ergonomics and Safety Conference (AIOE&SC) please ask for the block of rooms and conference rate of $115. The conference is listed as ISOES. However, should you be told that the hotel is full, request that the reservation clerk investigate further as there has been some confusion.
