Message from the President

Paul C. Champney, President

August 1997

Perhaps some you have wondered if the International Society for

Occupational Ergonomics and Safety (ISOES) is still viable.  I can

assure you that it is a viable and active organization.  Several

milestones that verify this will be cited in this message. In brief

summary while all plans for 1996-7 were not brought to fruition, the

Society is in good health.

As Jim Smith mentioned in a message to you in 1995 we fully expected to

publish the journal "Occupational Ergonomics" in 1996.  Our editor

experienced some technical problems and was unable to get copy to the

contracted publisher.  The publisher canceled the contract, making it

necessary for us to find another publisher.  Through the efforts of

Waldemar Karwowski and Biman Das, another has been found.  This new

publisher is IOS Press.  They also be published the proceedings of this

year's Annual Meeting.  I have every confidence that under Biman Das'

leadership as Editor-in-chief we will see the publication of the first

issue of "Occupational egonomics" in 1997.

Since you received Jim Smith's message we have held two successful

annual meetings.   As you know the 1996 meeting was held in Zurich and

I enjoyed seeing many of you there.  We owe great thanks to Anil Mital

and Helmut Krueger for their efforts in bringing us an informative and

enjoyable event. Again in 1997, I had the pleasure of meeting many of

you at our meeting in Washington, DC. The Co-Chairs of this meeting

were Drs. Das and Karwowski, we also owe them accolades for their

efforts in accomplishing a successful meeting.

I am also pleased that I can tell that Shrawan Kumar is currently

finalizing plans for our 1998 meeting.  That meeting will be held in

Ann Arbor, Michigan with the cooperation of the Center for Ergonomics,

Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Michigan.  In

addition to this Gene C. H. Lee informs me that he is preparing for the

1999 meeting and selecting a hotel.  The 1999 meeting will held in

Orlando, Florida, the home the University of Central Florida.

This year's election of officers has been completed.  Those who have

been elected are:

President - Elect-Dr. Shrawan Kumar

Secretary - Dr. Lesia L. Crumpton,

Treasurer - Mr. Keith Lile Jr.

Newsletter Editor - Ms. Cheryl L. Bennett,

Directors - Dr. Steven J. Morrisey and Mr. John L. Wick.

Past President - Paul Champney

Incoming President - Dr. Alvah C. Bittner Jr.

When the Executive Council of the International Society for

Occupational Ergonomics and Safety met during the Washington meeting

some operational problems became obvious. When you read the minutes of

the meeting of the general society you will see that the problems have

been acknowledged.  You will also see that the current officers of the

Society  have agreed to continue in office to facilitate the changes

necessary to correct the perceived problems.  At the meeting of the

Human Factors and Ergonomics to be held in September 1997 the two sets

of officers will meet to continue the effort that has already begun.

At this meeting the new officers will take office and continue the

effort.

Yes ISOES is alive and well.

MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEETING

June 2, 1997

Washington DC, USA

by Andris Freivalds, Ph.D., CPE, Secretary, ISOES

The General Meeting was brought to order by P. Champney, President, at 6:00 PM

o A. Freivalds, Secretary, read the minutes of the 1996 General

Meeting. A. Bittner indicated that he wasn't present at the

meeting. The correction was noted and the minutes were approved as

corrected on a motion by J. Ramsey.

o F. Aghazadeh questions the statement regarding $70 dues. P.

Champney explains that this will take place once the Journal

subscription is tied to the dues. At present the dues still remain

at $25.00.

o Treasurer's Report - R. Bishu indicates the current balance is

$92,414.73. Major expenditures for 1996-1997 were $5,000 for seed

money for 1998 Annual Conference in Ann Arbor, MI and $1,000 for

seed money for the Society's Journal. The 1996 Annual Conference

resulted in a loss of approximately $1,700 ($12,000 in seed money

was provided, only $10,300 was returned). The treasury has been

transferred on a permanent basis to a Dean Witter investment

account for non-profit organizations in Louisville, the Society

Headquarters. It is accessible by the Treasurer and W. Karwowski.

o In response to question from A. Bittner, the 1998 Conference may

require another $3,000 in seed money. However, this money will not

be dispensed until a preliminary budget is submitted.  A. Bittner

moves to approve the Treasurer's Report. J. Chen seconds. The

motion is approved unanimously.

o P. Champney further clarifies the conference situations. S. Kumar

has engaged two hotels for the 1998 conference in Ann Arbor, MI.

It will be scheduled appropriately so as not to conflict with the

University of Michigan short courses. The 1999 conference will be

hosted by G. Lee in Orlando, FL. Since the membership must approve

conference sites three years in advance, there may be a need to

have a mail ballot on this topic. At present the IEA has its

meeting in San Diego, and the Society could try to tie in with it.

However, since the IEA conference is in September and the Society

holds its meetings in June, an appropriate site will need to be

selected.

o Various sites are proposed by members:

         B. Ghahramani - St. Louis

         T. Khalil - England

         M. M. Ayoub - Asia

         L. Schulze - South America, perhaps Cartagena, Columbia. A. Bittner supports this idea.

         R. Bishu - suggest the same location in Asia as the PPCOE.

o Journal Editor's Report - B. Das explains some of the difficulties

with the previous publisher. The new publisher is IOS Press, the

same as for the proceedings. The first issue will come out Fall,

1997 with 6 papers already accepted. Future volumes will consist

of four issues per year. 25 manuscripts have already been received

and a further call for papers will be issued.

o A. Bittner asks what the rejection rate is. B. Das replies with

30%.

o B. Ghahramani would like to have a new membership directory. P.

Champney explains that there are presently three lists of members.

R. Bishu, A. Freivalds and W. Karwowski will coordinate these

lists in the next 30 days. This information may also put on a

Website. A. Bittner suggests that this may be better done in

e-mail since not all industrial members can access the WWW. A.

Schulze requests the information in a text format. B.  Ghahramani

request that members attach their e-mail address and telephone

numbers on conference papers.

o C. Bennett would like to obtain a list of conference attendees. J.

Wick has heard from  many industrial practitioners who are

interested in joining but haven't received any information. Again,

P. Champney clarifies the problem with the outdated mailing lists.

o F. Aghazadeh suggest the dues be added to the conference

registration. This will simplify the collection of dues. B.

Peacock agrees that this would be big convenience for industrial

members.

o P. Champney brings up the results of the election. Due to

difficulties of a late start of the whole process, nominations for

candidates arrived late and only one name was submitted. The

nominating committee discussed other possible candidates and came

up with a slate with one candidate for each office. Some might

object to this but could simply write in their own candidates.

Another problem, due to the incomplete mailing list, is that some

members didn't receive a ballot. Therefore the Executive Council,

in its earlier meeting, didn't certify the election. Instead it

voted to keep the elections open until August 1, 1997, so that the

disenfranchised members could still vote.

o B.  Ghahramani asked about further nominations. P. Champney

responded that nominations are closed, but write-in names are

acceptable. He also hopes that more votes will come in. Also,

since only 35 members out of 148 have paid their dues so far and

only fully paid -up members may vote, a second dues mailing will

be sent out.

o M. M. Ayoub suggests that the dues request should also ask for any

address updates and e-mail addresses.

o P. Champney also indicates that as part of correcting these

problems, the present officers will stay in power until the

elections are over and a midyear meeting can be held in

conjunction with HFES meeting in Albuquerque by September 26,

1997. This will assist the new Executive Council officers in a

more orderly transition. P. Champney also requested that any

member not receiving mailing leave their address with the

Secretary. This is especially important in regards to the new

Journal.

The meeting is adjourned at 6:50 PM on a motion by T. Khalil.
